‘Symbols, Calton Hill, Edinburgh’, 1987, from Shadow of Heaven, 1989
The Times (Nancy Durrant, Friday, 31 August 18, T2: Arts, page 13) commented: ‘Patricia Macdonald’s aerial work[s are] gorgeous, especially one that records Kate Whiteford’s installation ‘Sculpture for Calton Hill (1987)’, in which Pictish symbols were marked across the turf.’ This image is ‘Symbols, Calton Hill, Edinburgh’, 1987, from the exhibition (The Photographers’ Gallery, London, & UK tour, including to Portfolio Gallery, Edinburgh) and book (Aurum/Rizzoli, London/New York) Shadow of Heaven, 1989, and it portrayed these ephemerally-incised ancient symbols in relation to the contrasting monumental buildings placed on the hill around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, celebrating ‘rational’ and ‘Enlightenment’ values.
‘Braided river and ancient pines, Glen Feshie, Cairngorms’, 1988, from Shadow of Heaven, 1989
